Diabetes, hypertension or insomnia comes free with stress. And, no one can boast of staying clear of it. But there is a way out music if you want to keep pills at bay.
For the past few years, Laxmidhar Roul, a medical practitioner of SCB Medical College and Hospital has been treating patients with music apart from the conventional method. And, has been quite successful in it. Roul, an assistant professor of medicine is also a Sangeet Visharad in violin from Mumbai University and is using his knowledge of music to treat patients.
The doctor is supposedly the only medical practitioner in the state to treat patients with music. Recently, he has prepared a music CD based on different ragas for his patients. “Usually, musicians act as music therapists, but being a doctor I know the human body better. I am using music along with science to provide relief to my patients,” Roul said.
He said that there are seven chakras in our body Muladhara, Svadhisthana, Manipura, Anahata, Vishuddhi, Angya and Sahasrara and an imbalance in these causes diseases. But music helps to strike the right balance among these chakras.
“An imbalance in the chakras results in diseases but if they are in order it boosts immunity and helps react to medicines. Mantras and music help in aligning the chakras. Along with medicines, if the patient is also treated with music, then the patient can get relief from chronic ailments,” Roul said.
Over 80 patients have shown signs of early recovery after attending his music therapies sessions. “Patients suffering from chronic blood pressure, diabetes and psychiatric problems who are on lifelong medication have responded to the music therapies very well. After attending the music therapies their dosage of medicines have reduced and they are enjoying a better life,” Roul said.
Patients who cannot attend his music sessions, Roul has prepared a CD that a patient can listen to and relax. He is also creating awareness about music therapy by conducting seminars and conferences.
The doctor claims that there are specific ragas to cure different ailments. The Alahya Bilabal raga is used to heal paralysis, spondilytis, spinal problems and weight disorders. Similarly, to treat gynaecological disorders among women, sexual malfunctions, kidney trouble Yaman Kalyan raga comes in handy. A 45-minute long sound therapy session is prescribed once a week. Even the patients have also gives a thumbs up to the doctor. “In past one year I can feel the difference. I feel more energetic and can put in more hours of work after attending the music sessions. My medicine dose is also reduced,” said S K Moharana, an insomnia patient undergoing treatment with Roul.
